I hate to break it to you but most of your decisions have already been made then.In the world of so many options for us to choose from, this might not be an easy pill to swallow. It can take you a half hour to make a decision on what to watch on Netflix but when you decide to be great at something, you don’t have that many decisions to make anymore. In a way, this can feel like a weight has been taken off your shoulders, allowing you to focus on your goal.
If you are wondering what I mean by all this, let me explain.
When someone decides to be as good as possible at an inquired skill (such as your tennis game), there must be a change in your arrangement of priorities.Basically, the less important priorities in your life are phased out.For example, if you enjoy hanging with some friends on the weekend but you haven’t been able to be with your family that much over the week, you now a decision that is already made for you.Family first. This is the same idea when you are training. You cannot keep your same priority list as you did before. Some things will have to be sacrificed, starting with the lowest priority.
Nick Saban would say this many times throughout the season. His players do not have as many choices as they think they do.When you want to be great at something, you already know what must be done. You prioritize sleep, eating well, training as much as possible and of course your family and friends. This leaves you with very little free time left and therefore, not many decisions to make about what to do!
When I decided to write a book, I took away my free time to devote to writing.I planned my week and if I couldn’t fit a time in that evening,I would get up early to get some done in the morning.Regardless, that was a priority over watching tv and hanging with friends.Once I made the decision to write a book, the every day decisions were already made for me.
So back to your goals. If you want to be a better tennis player, you need to devote more time to the craft that doesn’t just include hitting balls and playing matches. You have to prioritize your health and fitness too.Everything matters when you are trying your best to be as good as you can at tennis. You look at the weather for the week ahead of time. You schedule your days around your training, not the other way around.
If you ever run into a situation where you have a few options that all sound good, think about what someone training to become a great tennis player would do.The decisions are usually simple from there.
